West Michigan Golf Show: A Good Walk Unspoiled and Inside!

Paraphrasing a famous line about golf, the 24th West Michigan Golf Show, February 10-12, 2012 is a good walk unspoiled. Void of ice and snow and inside the spacious and warm confines of DeVos Place, winter-weary golfers will walk the many aisles of the Show and receive a vicarious spring-like thrill by all of the exhibitors, events and seminars. Here are some of the highlights of this annual golf extravaganza:

• Widely acclaimed for its headliners, the Golf Show welcomes John Novosel Jr. of Tour Tempo, the cutting edge technology and teaching company, talking about “Golf's Last Secret Finally Revealed.” Also on the Fidelity Investments stage will be putting guru and PGA instructor Mike Shannon ranked #40 by Golf Digest in its listings of “America’s 50 Best Teachers.” Tour star Matt Kuchar’s putting coach, Shannon’s seminar is entitled: “What Great Putters Have in Common.”

Fidelity Seminar Stage: A Wealth of Speakers

One of the lasting hallmarks of the 24th West Michigan Golf Show has been the quality of its headliners and presenters. For the price of admission, show patrons are rewarded with a wealth of lessons, instruction and insights by the leading experts and topflight PGA teaching pros in the game. This year the Fidelity Seminar Stage features two distinct presenters, tempo expert John Novosel Jr. and putting guru Mike Shannon, both of whom are appearing at the Show for the first time on Feb.10-12 at DeVos Place in downtown Grand Rapids.

Representing Tour Tempo®, the fast-emerging teaching and technology company that has revolutionized the understanding of tempo in the golf swing, Novosel will explain and demonstrate how a 3-beats-to-1-beat timing ratio between the backswing and downswing is the bedrock equation of a sound swing. His seminar is entitled: “Tour Tempo: Golf’s Last Secret Finally Revealed.” Although it may sound esoteric, Novosel’s seminar promises to deliver results for everyday golfers. “Unlike certain Tour swing fundamentals, a good tempo is easily within the grasp of the average golfer,” said Novosel, a past presenter at the PGA of Sweden, the PGA of the Netherlands and the World Golf Fitness Summit. A long drive champion, Novosel lives in Overland Park, Kansas.

Also on the Fidelity Seminar Stage will be the celebrated putting guru and PGA teaching professional Mike Shannon, ranked recently by Golf Digest as #40 in its listing of “America’s 50 Best Teachers.” Part of the highly touted instructional team at Sea Island Golf Learning Center in St. Simons Island, Georgia, Shannon counts PGA Tour star Matt Kuchar as one of his many short game students. “I’ve worked with Matt on his putting for the past two years and it’s gratifying to see his success,” said Shannon. “Recently, we’ve worked on Matt switching over to a belly putter.” Shannon’s seminars are entitled: “What Great Putters Have In Common” and “The Evolution of Putting (and what happens when you don’t evolve with it).”

Providing added local and state support to these headliners are a number of well-respected golf teaching professionals. Blythefield CC’s Patti Butcher, the 2010 LPGA National Professional of the Year, will be on stage Friday with “Diva Golf: Be Comfortable on the Course and Play Better Golf, for ALL Skill Levels.”

24-Person Golf Prize: A Personal ‘Ryder Cup’ at Treetops?

In a word association game, “twenty-four” may elicit the following responses: hours, seven, or even Bauer, as in Jack Bauer the hero of the hit Fox TV series, 24, starring Kiefer Sutherland, that ended an eight-year run in 2010.

But to golfers attending the 2012 West Michigan Golf Show, “24” means “prize” as in the grand prize for the 24th edition of the Show, held Feb. 10-12 at DeVos Place in downtown Grand Rapids. This year, that prize is a 24-person (that’s six foursomes!) golf trip to Treetops Resort in Gaylord, Mich. In concert with media partner WZZM-TV 13, the Treetops trip is the largest prize ever given away in the history of the show.

“We wanted to do something extra special this year to let golfers know when they’re thinking about planning a guys’, gals’ or couples’ getaway or tournament for them to think of Treetops,” says Kevin McKinley, Director of Golf. “2012 is also a Ryder Cup year so some lucky winner could be inspired to form two 12-person teams and make a memorable and fun event out of it.”

Grand Rapids/Kent County experienced a banner year in 2011 with continued growth in hotel performance, occupancy, and room revenue and record attendance at area attractions.

Nashville, Tenn.-based Smith Travel Research, a leading provider of hotel performance data, reports that Kent County hotels earned $114.4 million in room revenue in 2011. Kent County hotels increased occupancy by nearly 7 percent and revenue per available hotel room by nearly 11 percent. Occupancy outpaced national and state growth in all of these categories.

"In an industry that has experienced its share of challenges throughout the past three years Kent County has maintained its momentum in the tourism market both nationally and statewide," said Doug Small, president of Experience Grand Rapids. "For the second consecutive year, Kent County reported double digit growth in hotel revenue and outpaced national and state growth averages in occupancy."

Small also noted that the cities of Grand Rapids and Detroit are leading the State of Michigan's hotel revenue growth. Small added: "This is also the third year in a row that our staff has booked more than 125,000 future convention, sports and group tour room nights throughout Kent County. The cooperative spirit from our hotel partners, other industry partners and a refreshed brand image played a major role in these positive, encouraging outcomes."

Blockbuster Events and Exhibits Attracted Record Crowds

New and returning high-profile events such as LaughFest and ArtPrize contributed to a surge in attendance at area attractions and economic activity in 2011. The inaugural LaughFest comedy festival attracted more than 55,000 people to 228 ticketed and free events, including big name touring artists Betty White and Bill Cosby. Nearly 36,000 tickets were sold during the 10-day festival, which launched with a rubber chicken toss that set a Guinness World Record.

The third annual ArtPrize competition experienced another year of great success. A new economic impact study conducted by Anderson Economic Group revealed the event added $15.4 million to the local economy, attracted more than 320,000 visitors and created more than 200 new jobs during its 19 days.

An impressive collection of world-class exhibits resulted in record crowds at downtown museums. Diana: A celebration at the Grand Rapids Art Museum welcomed nearly 100,000 visitors. The Bodies Revealed exhibition at the Grand Rapids Public Museum drew more than 171,000 people, making it the second-best attended exhibition in the museum's history.

Overall attendance at these and other local cultural institutions multiplied in 2011 as well. UICA's new facility experienced the most growth from 2010 to 2011, with an increase of nearly 60 percent. GRAM saw a 27 percent rise in visitors throughout the year, and attendance at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum grew by more than 21 percent during the same time period.

"2011 was another phenomenal year for tourism in West Michigan," said Ed Wilson, Experience Grand Rapids board chair. "In the last year, Grand Rapids has moved forward with a stronger entrepreneurial spirit than we've ever known before. We have certainly raised the bar with the addition of LaughFest to our city's entertainment scene, yet another amazing year of ArtPrize and record turnouts at area museums and attractions."

The creative efforts of the Experience Grand Rapids marketing team led to award-winning work in 2011. Perry Farrell stands out as one of music’s most forward-thinking and enigmatic frontmen, and his vocals soar with vibrancy, vulnerability and vitality. Golf Show Headliner’s Putting Tips for 2012

OK, as we were saying last time: Although winter has set in, die-hard golfers never stop thinking about their games. In fact, the off-season is often the ideal time for many to set new goals and to even start some practice drills ahead of the 2012 golf season. That’s why the headliners for the 24th West Michigan Golf Show are offering some helpful tips now ahead of their appearance on Feb. 10-12 at DeVos Place in downtown Grand Rapids. Today’s tips are courtesy of headliner Mike Shannon, renowned putting guru and PGA teaching pro at the Sea Island Golf Learning Center, recently ranked by Golf Digest as #40 in its listing of “America’s 50 Best Teachers.”

With PGA Tour star Matt Kuchar as one of his many students, Shannon offers four key putting fundamentals to start the new season:

# 1: Take your address

For a proper setup which leads to perfect aim, start this way: holding your putter, stand up straight and extend your arms. Then, draw your elbows in snug to your rib cage; this keeps your arms and torso "connected" and promotes a consistent, one-piece, pendulum-type motion. Then, tilt your upper body forward until the putter head rests behind the ball. And put a little flex in your knees. You don't want to putt with stiff legs.

# 2: Find your ball position

How close you stand to the ball is key — it frees you to make a relaxed, pendulum-like stroke. Stand too close and the putter will work out-to-in, which will result in a pulled putt. Stand too far away and you'll push putts to the right. How far away should you stand? On average, Tour pros have 2.5 putter head lengths from their toe line to the near side of the ball. Use trial-and-error to find your ideal distance.

Next, you have to find where to play the ball in your stance — center, forward or back. It's different for everyone. To find out, ask a buddy for help. After finding a straight putt, take your address and aim, with your friend standing a few paces behind the ball. Have him or her tell you if your putter head is aimed right, left or dead straight. If you're aimed left, you're playing the ball too far forward and need to move it back a bit. Aimed right? Move the ball forward until your friend tells you that your putter head is dead square.

# 3: Aim your putter

You may be aiming wrong on the greens and not even know it. Correct aim is the foundation of good putting. In my research, I’ve found aim is influenced by your vision and your dominant eye. I've found that every player has a unique front-to-back ball position.

Simple as 1-2-3: Golf Show Headliner’s Tempo Tips for 2012

Although winter has set in, die hard golfers never stop thinking about their games. In fact, the off-season is often the ideal time for many to set new goals and even start some practice drills ahead of the upcoming golf season. That’s why the headliners for the 24th West Michigan Golf Show are offering some helpful tips ahead of their appearance on February 10-12 at DeVos Place in downtown Grand Rapids. Today’s tips are courtesy of headliner John Novosel Jr., a past presenter for the PGA of Sweden, the PGA of Holland, and the World Golf Fitness Summit.
Representing Tour Tempo, the innovative teaching and technology company that stresses the scientifically proven importance of a consistent swing tempo, Novosel offers three basic tempo tips:

Tip #1: Use the 3:1 ratio on full swings

“In their full swing, Tour-level professionals’ tempos have three parts backswing to one part downswing,” says Novosel. “In other words, if the backswing takes .75 seconds, then the downswing should take .25 seconds. This is the 3:1 time ratio of backswing to downswing.” According to Novosel, most amateurs’ tempos are in the 4:1 category or worse.

Novosel adds: “An ideal way to check your tempo is by taking video of your swing. When viewed later in the editing mode, the video will show how many ‘frames’ it takes you on the backswing and then how many on the follow through. This comparison is your ratio.”

Tip #2: Use the 2:1 ratio for short game shots

“In our research,” says Novosel, “we discovered that short game shots use a 2:1 ratio of backswing to downswing. This includes half wedges, bunker shots, chip shots, and putting. So when golfers are not making full swings, they shouldn’t try to create too much speed by using a 3:1 ratio. These shots are about precision and the 2:1 ratio gives you that precision.”

Tip #3: Practice your tempo

Novosel says most golfers don’t practice tempo and when they do, they don’t work on the correct things. “Set aside time to work on just tempo,” says Novosel. “An easy way to do it correctly is to use (yes, a shameless plug) Tour Tempo. Tour Tempo’s three audio tones tell you when to start your swing, when to change directions at the top and, when you should be at impact. It’s simple and it works.” Novosel adds: “The bonus here is that once you learn the tones, you have a hard time forgetting them.”

Mike Shannon, a renowned putting guru and PGA teaching professional recently ranked by Golf Digest as #40 in its listing of “America’s 50 Best Teachers.”

The national tour of MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET, playing DeVos Performance Hall as part of the Broadway Grand Rapids Fifth Third Bank Series, will feature a special appearance during the Wednesday, January 18th 7:30PM performance by original drummer W.S. “Fluke” Holland. The performance will also feature a post-show talk back for audience members.

W.S. “Fluke” Holland was the real life drummer during the famed 1956 “Million Dollar Quartet” recording session with Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins. W.S.’s musical career began in 1954 at Sun Records when he played drums for Carl Perkins band, including such hits as Blue Suede Shoes. After considering leaving the music business in 1960, W.S. received a call from Johnny Cash which then led to a long career as drummer in Cash’s Tennessee Three band. W.S. spent almost 40 years playing with Johnny Cash and played on most of his recordings including Folsom Prison Blues and Walk the Line among many others.

This exhibition, juried by Professor Margaret Vega, showcases work from current MFA candidates and recent graduates of Kendall College of Art and Design. Eighteen artists present a diverse body of work in Drawing, Painting and Printmaking.

The 2011 MFA Juried Exhibition opens November 17th and runs through January 8th. Please join the artists for an opening reception Thursday, November 17th from 5-7PM, and an artist meet-and-greet on Saturday, December 3rd from 1-3PM. The title song of this musical classic is, of course, White Christmas, but another in the many memorable melodies is, in fact, Count Your Blessings. The main storyline behind the musical itself is tied to friendship and sharing, a wonderful community message as we go into the holiday season.

During all 8 performances of White Christmas, patrons are encouraged to bring and donate non-perishable food items that will be distributed to Access food pantries. Each person who donates receives a special ornament to place on our holiday tree in the DeVos Performance Hall lobby. Prior to each performance, one winner will be selected from those that have donated. Mia Tavonatti of Santa Ana, California has taken home 1st place for ArtPrize 2011. Her entry, "Crucifixion", was announced as the winner at DeVos Performance Hall last night. Her art piece was at DeVos Place.

Tavonatti has now finished in the top five of ArtPrize the past two years as last year she took 2nd place with her entry "Svelata." Her entry this year was a 13-foot by 9-foot drawing of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, and was made to be an altarpiece for a Roman Catholic Church in California. The entry now, however, will be property of ArtPrize.

Tracy Van Duinen's entry "The Metaphorest Project" won 2nd place and Lynda Cole's entry "Rain" took home 3rd place. As a new rule of ArtPrize, the top 10 of this year's competition will not be allowed to participate in next year's ArtPrize, but are welcomed to enter again in future competitions.

“I Believe I Become” ArtPrize Entry at DeVos Place

A team of artists and carpenters from Buist Electric and Rockford Construction installed a massive student mural at DeVos Place as part of this fall's ArtPrize competition. With support from several local businesses and two local artists, a team of student artists from Grand Rapids Public Schools has created a mural to showcase their interpretation of "I Believe I Become."

"The students created the concepts for six large panels that show what I Believe I Become means to them," said Georgia Taylor, local artist and creative director of the project. "We created initial studies digitally, then projected them onto the panels. Then the students sketched and painted their interpretations."

"I Believe I Become" is the rally cry for Believe 2 Become, a local education initiative now in its second year. The Believe 2 Become initiative serves students in the four neighborhood zones in the Grand Rapids area. About 15,000 children live in the four zones.

Underwriting for the "I Believe I Become" student ArtPrize project came from Buist Electric. "We were thrilled to be able to make this possible," said Steve Longstreet, President. "We recognize that students are our community's future. When they set goals, believe in themselves, and work hard to learn and achieve, we are all better for it."

Other supporters include Rockford Construction, which provided studio space and installation support; Standard Lumber, which provided the plywood panels for the art; Modern Hardware, which provided primer and paint; DeVos Place, which is hosting the mural; Grand Rapids Public Schools, which provided the use of a digital projector; and Grand Rapids Student Advancement Foundation, which served as fiduciary for the project.

Local artists Georgia Taylor and Marco Riolo are working with student artists from Grand Rapids Public Schools. Students on the creative team are Sophie Rodriguez, a junior at Creston High School, and 2011 Ottawa Hills graduate Maurica Stewart. Students on the production team are Robert Daylie, Zaylie Bebee, and Luiz Farfen. The mural will be on display at DeVos Place during ArtPrize.

Downtown Venues Kicking Off ArtPrize With Public Opening Receptions

Van Andel Arena is getting on board. Debuting its first ArtPrize exhibit as an official ArtPrize venue, Van Andel Arena will join DeVos Place in opening the competition with public receptions simultaneously just down the block from each other.

DeVos Place and Van Andel Arena will hold the artist receptions on Wednesday, September 21 from 6-9 pm. The receptions will include food and beverages (cash bar). DeVos Place will hold the reception in the Grand Gallery. This is a great starting point for the first "official" night as 63 different artists will have works represented in Grand Rapids' premiere convention center.

Van Andel Arena will host the artist reception at the same time in front of the Fifth Third Bank Vault (restaurant in the arena). The focus will be around the artists by our marquee. The restaurant will be open too. Food and beverages with a cash bar will be available also.

For over a decade, Jordan Eagles has been using and preserving blood in his multi-dimensional works as a method to explore themes of regeneration and the metaphysical connections between body, spirit and nature. Eagles permanently preserves the blood on clear and white Plexiglas within layers of resin, suspending the organic medium's fluid forms under the resin's glass-like surface. His work is a dynamic wash of burgundy, crimson, ruby's - commingling with near blacks, and rust colors forming a rich, vibrant surface that glows with energy. Now mixing his medium with copper, Jordan creates an effect that is not unlike erupting molten lava - a sparkling geology of vibrant colors and seemingly prehistoric textures that range from fiery orange to deep crimson - revealing as much about life as about death.

Les Miserables originally opened in London at the Barbican Theatre on October 8, 1985, transferred to the Palace Theatre on December 4, 1985 and moved to its current home at the Queen's Theatre on April 3, 2004 where it continues to play to packed houses. When Les Miserables celebrated its 21st London birthday on October 8, 2006, it became the World's Longest-Running Musical, surpassing the record previously held by Cats in London's West End.

In celebration of its 25th anniversary, the legendary musical Les Miserables made theatrical history with an international first-three different productions in London at the same time. The Original Production (still playing to packed houses at the Queen's Theatre), the acclaimed New 25th anniversary Production at the Barbican (where the show originally premiered) and a celebratory concert at The O2 Arena. Popular West Michigan band Mid-Life Crisis (MLC) celebrates its 10-year anniversary by putting on a special all-star benefit concert at DeVos Performance Hall on Friday, September 30 with all proceeds going to the hunger relief organization, Kids’ Food Basket (KFB).

The Concert will feature performances by musical friends Brian Vander Ark, Troll For Trout, Domestic Problems’ Andy & Billy, and others. The show will also include appearances by local celebrities such as George Heartwell, Tony Gates, John Gonzalez and others. These musical and celebrity friends of MLC have all worked with the band over the years on numerous philanthropic projects to help our community. The show will culminate with a special performance by MLC, followed by an all-star jam.

Documentary Film Chronicling The Creation of The “No Better Than This” Album To Open The Show

Concert dates for the next leg of John Mellencamp’s No Better Than This Tour, that began last year in Indiana, have just been announced with a performance set this November 1st at DeVos Performance Hall at 7PM. Mellencamp’s No Better Than This Tour is just back from a run of dates in Ireland, England, Germany, France, Netherlands, Denmark, Switzerland and Italy. The 17-date tour begins on October 25 at Boston’s Citi Performing Arts Center Wang Theater and will be making a stop in Savannah, GA at the Johnny Mercer Theater on November 11.

This Savannah show is of extra significance in light of the fact that sessions for Mellencamp’s critically acclaimed “No Better Than This” album began less than half a mile away at Savannah’s First African Baptist Church. Mellencamp and producer T Bone Burnett would go on to record the rest of the album at Sun Studio in Memphis and in Room 414 of San Antonio's Gunter Hotel where Robert Johnson recorded in 1936. The sessions were documented on a 55-year-old mono tape recorder using just one vintage microphone at each location.

As a reflection of the diversity of styles and material that have been a hallmark of Mellencamp's eclectic career, the No Better Than This concerts are formatted into three segments. These showcase John Mellencamp in an acoustic context, fronting a small combo recalling blues/country and rockabilly roots and with his full rock band. Musicians backing Mellencamp include Michael Wanchic (guitar), Andy York (guitar), Miriam Sturm (violin), John Gunnell (electric and upright bass), Dane Clark (drums and percussion) and Troye Kinnett (accordion/keyboards).

Each of the No Better Than This tour dates will be preceded by a screening of It’s About You, the documentary by filmmakers Kurt and Ian Markus, shot on Super 8, over the course of 2009’s Bob Dylan-John Mellencamp-Willie Nelson tour of minor league baseball stadiums. The hour-long film, both a SXSW Film Festival and Nashville Film Festival selection, chronicles the creation of the No Better Than This album that was recorded on that tour’s off days. The film will be shown at 7 PM at each of the No Better Than This Tour venues so ticket holders are advised to arrive in time to see it.

“Certified Guitar Player” Performs at DeVos Performance Hall on September 29

Before he makes a stop to perform live in DeVos Performance Hall this September, fans of legendary guitarist and two-time Grammy Nominee Tommy Emmanuel can catch a glimpse of what to expect this week. US Public Broadcasting TV stations across the country will be airing “Tommy Emmanuel & Friends: Live at the Balboa Theatre.” WGVU will air the special on Wednesday, June 8 at 8PM.

Grammy-nominated singer and songwriter Pam Rose was one to join Emmanuel during the February taping, performing two songs including “I’ll Still Be Loving You.” Frank Vignola and Vinny Raniolo also joined the fun before fellow Aussie Anthony Snape connects with Emmanuel to much of the audience’s delight.

Balboa Theatre is located in downtown San Diego, California. Legendary guitarist and two-time Grammy Nominee, Tommy Emmanuel has garnered hundreds of thousands of fans worldwide. A household name in his native Australia, Emmanuel will play several North American shows including a stop in Grand Rapids’ DeVos Performance Hall on September 29 at 8PM. Known for his unique style—what he calls “finger style”—Emmanuel plays the guitar the way a pianist plays the piano. Using all ten fingers to perform the melody, rhythm, bass, and drums, Emmanuel can use his sole guitar as a whole band. His versatility has taken Emmanuel from international Jazz Festivals to shows with the Sydney Philharmonic, The Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, and performances for the Masai people in remote areas of Kenya.

Born into a musical family, Tommy was considered a child prodigy. In 1962, Tommy heard Nashville guitarist Chet Atkins' music for the first time and was riveted by the complexity of Atkins' solo sound. He spent hours trying to figure out the "fingerpicking" style and gobbled up each of the American star's albums as they came out.

After Tommy's appearance with his brother Phil in the Closing Ceremonies of the Sydney Olympic Games and his debut at the famous Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas, in late 2000, Americans wanted to know who this mysterious Australian guitar virtuoso was. In 2001, Emmanuel released his first solo-acoustic album, ONLY, and in 2002 it debuted in the U.S. Emmanuel's popularity in the US has grown by leaps and bounds, aided by a non-stop touring schedule and increasing exposure in the media. Since 2005, Tommy was inducted into the National Thumbpickers' Hall of Fame in Muhlenberg, KY (the only non-American ever to be selected) and awarded with Thumbpicker of the Year and Album of the Year by the group, as well. He played Carnegie Hall for Les Paul's 90th birthday Tribute Concert. His ‘The Mystery’ album earned a Grammy nomination in 2006 for Best Country Instrumental for 'Gameshow Rag/Cannonball Rag'. In 2008, Guitar Player Magazine and Acoustic Guitar Magazine named him Best Acoustic Guitarist and Gold Medalist - Fingerstyle category in the Readers' Choice and Players' Choice Awards, respectively.

In Nashville in 1999, Tommy was honored by his mentor, Chet Atkins with the title of “Certified Guitar Player” for his contribution to fingerstyle guitar, a rare distinction shared by only three other people in the world (Jerry Reed, Steve Wariner and John Knowles). It was a crowning moment for Emmanuel and a title the self-proclaimed "humble, uneducated, country kid" from Down Under takes very seriously.

Hunger Statistics:
-Within the Access Pantry Network of Kent County there are 75 food pantries that distribute nearly 20,000 food services to individuals every month.
-In 2010 there were 46,925 individuals who visited a pantry within the Access Pantry Network one or more times. This is 7.7 percent, or one in every 12 residents, of Kent County’s population.
- According to the Food Research and Action Center 1 in 6 Americans is food insecure. Kent County follows this national trend as evidenced by the over 110,000 residents who receive SNAP (formerly known as Food Stamps) benefits.
-The Access Pantry Network distributed 90,000 food services to children in 2010.
-In Kent County, there are 85,000 individuals living below the poverty line (US Census Bureau 2008).

STOMP has made it its mission to partner with food banks across the country to STOMP Out Hunger. The show began its quest to reduce hunger in North America with a partnership with Philabundance, the Philadelphia region’s largest hunger relief organization, in December of 2007. The producers were looking for a way to give back to the community and with the timing of the holidays the partnership was a natural one. However, due to the current economic climate including high unemployment rates and state budget cuts, hunger organizations have seen an overwhelming demand for food assistance. Founded at Indiana University in the fall of 1996, Straight No Chaser’s goal was to expand the boundaries of the traditional college a cappella group. From the start, they viewed themselves more like a local band that just happened to use their voices as their instruments. As original member Randy Stine comments, “We take the music very seriously; we just don’t take ourselves too seriously.” In the process, they are reinventing the idea of a cappella on the modern pop landscape.

In 1999, the graduating members of Straight No Chaser chose their replacements, ensuring that the new tradition they had created would continue on with successive generations of IU undergrads. Then, in 2006, the unexpected happened – Indiana University decided to host a reunion concert for the original members. In honor of the event, Stine posted footage from one of their 1998 concerts online and to the group’s surprise, their version of “The 12 Days of Christmas” – interpolating Toto’s “Africa” – became the hottest viral video of the holiday season. Among the millions of viewers was Atlantic Records Chairman/CEO Craig Kallman, who tracked Straight No Chaser down and promptly signed them to the label.

Three full-length albums and one EP have since followed, cumulatively selling more than half a million copies. The group has been featured on ABC World News Tonight, HLN, and Today, among others. Straight No Chaser’s third and most recent album, “WITH A TWIST,” marked the group’s highest chart debut to date, entering the Billboard 200 at #29 upon its April 2010 release. The Metropolitan Pier and Exhibition Authority (MPEA) has selected SMG, the global leader in convention, arena and stadium management, as private manager of its McCormick Place Complex. The complex includes 9 million square feet in six buildings and is the nation's largest convention center.

Julia Murney and Jennifer Laura Thompson, stars of the smash Broadway hit “Wicked,” will join the Grand Rapids Symphony for a fantastic concert of diva showstoppers May 13-15. Julia Murney has played the misunderstood wicked witch, Elphaba, on Broadway and on the national tour of “Wicked.” Her other New York shows including Andrew Lippia’s “The Wild Party,” for which she earned a Drama Desk nomination, as well as “Lennon,” “Crimes of the Heart” and others. From the Kennedy Center and Town Hall, she has also performed regionally with the Philly Pops and Cincinnati Pops. Murney also has a number of television credits, including “30 Rock,” “Sex and the City,” “NYPD Blue” and all three “Law and Orders.”

A native of Southfield and University of Michigan graduate, Jennifer Laura Thompson has played Glinda, the good witch, in “Wicked” on Broadway. She was nominated for a Tony Award for her role in “Urinetown,” and also has performed in “Lend Me a Tenor,” “Footloose” and the premier of “Little Miss Sunshine.” She has numerous off-Broadway roles to her credit, as well as appearances with the Atlanta Symphony, Toronto Symphony and others.

Murney and Thompson will sing favorites such as “I Could Have Danced All Night” from “My Fair Lady,” “My Heart Will Go On” from “Titanic” and, of course, “Defying Gravity” from “Wicked.” These classic songs will be interspersed with arrangements from Reineke such as “I Hear A Symphony: Symphonic Sounds of Diana Ross.”

One of the most sought-after pops conductors, composers and arrangers, Reineke was appointed principal pops conductor to the National Symphony Orchestra this season. His guest conducting appearances have included the Hollywood Bowl, where he performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and multi-faceted entertainer Wayne Brady, as well as with orchestras in Detroit, Houston, Toronto and Baltimore, among others. He has also collaborated with rock legend Peter Frampton.

“Our Broadway show is always some of the most exciting and popular music that we perform in the Fox Motors Pops Series,” said Associate Conductor John Varineau. “I am excited that we are featuring two of the leading ladies from the smash hit, ‘Wicked,’ along with the return of the fantastically talented conductor Steven Reineke.

Maranda: Where You Live

Grand Rapids Symphony Welcomes Jim Brickman, America’s Best-Selling Contemporary Solo Pianist, April 12

The Grand Rapids Symphony welcomes pianist Jim Brickman for a single performance on Tuesday, April 12, at 7:30 p.m. in DeVos Performance Hall.

With six Gold and Platinum albums to his credit, Brickman will perform with the Grammy®-nominated Symphony to present an evening of popular romantic piano and orchestral music. Brickman, who has collaborated with many gifted musical artists, has been said to revolutionize the sound of solo piano with his pop-style instrumentals.

The concert is part of the SymphonicBoom series, which is designed to bring world-class entertainers and outside-the-box programming to West Michigan.

Associate Conductor John Varineau will lead the Symphony in the performance featuring Brickman, who is the best-selling contemporary solo pianist in America. The program will include many of his chart-topping hits, including “Crossroads,” “If You Believe,” “Hero’s Dream,” “Valentine” and “The Gift.”

Shows Appreciation to Community with Performances April 15 & 16

In appreciation for the generous support it has received from West Michigan throughout its 81-year history, the Grand Rapids Symphony is dedicating two performances in April to the community.

Guest conductor Andrew Grams and the Grand Rapids Symphony will present the community appreciation concert titled “Two Dons and Dvorak.” The performances, spotlighting the talents of Symphony musicians Nancy Steltmann, principal cello, and Leslie Van Becker, principal viola, will be held at DeVos Performance Hall on April 15 and 16 at 8 p.m. The concert is part of the Richard and Helen DeVos Classical Series.

As a thank you to the community, ticket prices have been significantly reduced for these performances. Tickets for adults are $18, seniors over the age of 62 are $9 and students are $5.

On the concert’s first half, the famous stories of two historic Dons – Quixote and Giovanni – will be brought to life through the power music. The overture to Mozart’s opera “Don Giovanni,” blends comedy and drama as it tells the story of the licentious Italian nobleman.

Strauss’ musical story of “Don Quixote” showcases Steltmann on cello representing the Spanish country gentleman and Van Becker on viola representing his long-suffering sidekick, Sancho Panza. This concert continues the Symphony’s tradition of featuring its musicians as soloists, inviting the audience to experience the breadth of talent possessed by individual Symphony members.

The evening’s performance will conclude with Dvorak’s Symphony No. 8, a cheery symphony in four movements influenced by the Bohemian folk music that the composer loved.

Grams has been called one of America’s most promising talented, young conductors. He began his career in Michigan at the age of 17, when he directed the World Youth Symphony Orchestra at Interlochen Arts Camp. He has appeared with many leading symphonies, including the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony, National Symphony Orchestra of Washington, D.C. the Melbourne Symphony and others. During the 2010-11 season, Grams – who is also an accomplished violinist – debuted with the BBC Symphony in London and performed with orchestras in Germany, Canada and the Netherlands.

Steltmann has been principal cellist of the Symphony since 1990. She came to the orchestra from New York City in 1980, where she was assistant principal. She holds bachelors and masters degrees from the Julliard School, and has performed in New York and throughout the Midwest as a guest artist.

Van Becker has been principal viola of the Symphony since 1978. In addition to her work with the Symphony, she performs in musical festivals, quartets and chamber orchestras. She holds a bachelor of music degree from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and masters in music from the Yale University School of Music.
