Lower Prices and Added Talent Highlight Changes To Fred Hammond Gospel Performance

Local artists Greg Peacock Featuring The LifeMusic Crew, “Sunday’s Best” contestant Chase Stancle and dancer Laassah Taylor are all jumping on the Fred Hammond line-up for his performance at DeVos Performance Hall on December 30 at 7PM. But patrons won’t have to pay more to see an upgraded lineup.

To top it off, patrons can now gain admittance for lower prices than initially announced. Ticket prices are now $25 and $40. Tickets will go up $5 on the day of show. Groups of 10 or more receive $3 off $40 tickets and $2 off $25 tickets per ticket. Tickets can be purchased at the Van Andel Arena and DeVos Place box offices, Ticketmaster outlets including D&W stores and select Family Fare locations, ticketmaster.com or charge by phone: 800-745-3000.

For three amazing decades, singer/songwriter/producer/musician Fred Hammond has been a Gospel music arbiter, consistently pushing the genre into to new melodic territory. The Detroit native ascended from bass-playing sideman for The Winans; to founding member of the trendsetting sextet Commissioned; to creating the further renowned ensemble Radical for Christ, to becoming a highly influential solo artist and producer in his own right.

From traditional gospel to funk, acoustic rock and even a cappella pieces, Fred Hammond’s new 15-song set pulls from a sprawling musical palette to mold his musical messages—something the Community Inclusion Group was looking forward to when collaborating with Marvin Sapp Ministries to bring Hammond over.

Convention/Arena Authority Operations Committee member and CAA Community Inclusion Group Chairperson, Darius Quinn states that the “group's number one priority this year is to increase the number of top level events and attractions for communities of color to enjoy within our facilities (Van Andel Arena, DeVos Place Convention Center and the DeVos Performance Hall). Working in conjunction with Marvin Sapp Ministries, helps us to get closer to meeting this goal by bringing to Grand Rapids one of the all time greatest gospel singers in Fred Hammond."

Million Dollar Quartet Coming to DeVos Performance Hall in January

The national tour of Million Dollar Quartet, the international smash hit musical inspired by the true story of four rock 'n' roll icons will make its Grand Rapids premiere January 17-22, 2012 at DeVos Performance Hall as part of the Fifth Third Bank Broadway Grand Rapids Series. Tickets are now on sale at ticketmaster.com

On December 4, 1956, an auspicious twist of fate brought Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis Presley together. The place was Sun Records' storefront studio in Memphis. The man who made it happen was Sam Phillips, the man who discovered them all. The four young musicians united for the only time in their careers for an impromptu recording that has come to be known as one of the greatest rock 'n' roll jam sessions of all time.

Million Dollar Quartet brings that legendary night to life with an irresistible tale of broken promises, secrets, betrayal and celebrations featuring an eclectic score of rock, gospel, R&B and country hits.

The New York Times praises Million Dollar Quartet by saying, "A hit parade of favorites, providing the audience with blast after blast of sweet nostalgia." Echoing accolades come from the Associated Press as they describe the production as "Musical Fireworks! Million Dollar Quartet gets the cheering audience to its feet!"

It won a Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical and received a Tony Award nomination for Best Musical and Best Book of a Musical. The show received an Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical, a Drama Desk nomination for Outstanding Musical Revue and three Drama League nominations including Distinguished Production of a Musical and Distinguished Performance.

Million Dollar Quartet is affordably priced from $27.50 and will perform 8 shows at DeVos Performance Hall from January 17-22, 2012. The performance schedule is Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 7:30 PM, Friday at 8:00 PM, Saturday at 2:00 PM & 8:00 PM, and Sunday at 1:00 PM and 6:30 PM. Tickets are available at the DeVos Place and Van Andel Arena box offices, all Ticketmaster locations, ticketmaster.com or via phone at 1-800-745-3000.

In October, Yanni was embraced and honored by the country of China when the government invited Yanni to adopt a panda during his time in Chengdu. Traditionally such privilege is reserved for countries rather than personalities. On December 16th and 17th, Yanni will perform and film two shows at Castillo San Felipe Del Morro, a recognized UNESCO Heritage Site, in Puerto Rico. The show will air exclusively in the United States on PBS and debut March 3, 2012. Help to End Hunger with Irving Berlin’s White Christmas

Access of West Michigan and Broadway Grand Rapids hope to encourage families in the greater Grand Rapids community to count your blessings - and share them. Throughout the eight performance run of Irving Berlin's White Christmas at DeVos Performance Hall (Nov. 15 - 20) the area wide food pantry program and Broadway Grand Rapids will partner to present theater patrons with an opportunity to help fellow West Michigan residents who are in need by donating non-perishable food items. These will be gathered in the theater lobby and distributed to those less fortunate through the various Access food pantries throughout Kent County. The title song of this musical classic is, of course, White Christmas, but another in the many memorable melodies is, in fact, Count Your Blessings. The main storyline behind the musical itself is tied to friendship and sharing, a wonderful community message as we go into the holiday season.

During all 8 performances of White Christmas, patrons are encouraged to bring and donate non-perishable food items that will be distributed to Access food pantries. Each person who donates receives a special ornament to place on our holiday tree in the DeVos Performance Hall lobby. Prior to each performance, one winner will be selected from those that have donated. Prizes include tickets to upcoming shows, overnight stays at the JW Marriot and the Amway Grand Plaza, and dinner gift certificates among others. At the conclusion of the week's performances, the fully decorated tree will then be donated to an Access food pantry site for their holiday festivities. Tickets for Irving Berlin's White Christmas are now on sale and are available at ticketmaster.com.

“I Believe I Become” ArtPrize Entry at DeVos Place

A team of artists and carpenters from Buist Electric and Rockford Construction installed a massive student mural at DeVos Place as part of this fall's ArtPrize competition. With support from several local businesses and two local artists, a team of student artists from Grand Rapids Public Schools has created a mural to showcase their interpretation of "I Believe I Become."

"The students created the concepts for six large panels that show what I Believe I Become means to them," said Georgia Taylor, local artist and creative director of the project. "We created initial studies digitally, then projected them onto the panels. Then the students sketched and painted their interpretations."

"I Believe I Become" is the rally cry for Believe 2 Become, a local education initiative now in its second year. The Believe 2 Become initiative serves students in the four neighborhood zones in the Grand Rapids area. About 15,000 children live in the four zones.

Underwriting for the "I Believe I Become" student ArtPrize project came from Buist Electric. "We were thrilled to be able to make this possible," said Steve Longstreet, President. "We recognize that students are our community's future. When they set goals, believe in themselves, and work hard to learn and achieve, we are all better for it."

Other supporters include Rockford Construction, which provided studio space and installation support; Standard Lumber, which provided the plywood panels for the art; Modern Hardware, which provided primer and paint; DeVos Place, which is hosting the mural; Grand Rapids Public Schools, which provided the use of a digital projector; and Grand Rapids Student Advancement Foundation, which served as fiduciary for the project.

Local artists Georgia Taylor and Marco Riolo are working with student artists from Grand Rapids Public Schools. Students on the creative team are Sophie Rodriguez, a junior at Creston High School, and 2011 Ottawa Hills graduate Maurica Stewart. Students on the production team are Robert Daylie, Zaylie Bebee, and Luiz Farfen. The mural will be on display at DeVos Place during ArtPrize.

Eagles permanently preserves the blood on clear and white Plexiglas within layers of resin, suspending the organic medium's fluid forms under the resin's glass-like surface. His work is a dynamic wash of burgundy, crimson, ruby's - commingling with near blacks, and rust colors forming a rich, vibrant surface that glows with energy. Now mixing his medium with copper, Jordan creates an effect that is not unlike erupting molten lava - a sparkling geology of vibrant colors and seemingly prehistoric textures that range from fiery orange to deep crimson - revealing as much about life as about death.

Explosive energy, inner light, organic patterns and bodily orbs: Jordan's latest series continues to explore the physical and intangible connections between the body-spirit and the universe. These new works are built on pure white Plexiglas and marked with minimal organic forms. The curves and flows, created with blood, allow the sleek and smooth synthetic elements to exist in harmony with the organic - illuminating the finite details of the blood as well as its infinite cosmic energy.

Jordan's latest work, BARC 1-6, is a six-panel exploration of the connection between body and spirit; representing regeneration, rebirth, and the powerful life-force in us all. Each panel, composed of Blood, Acrylic, Resin, and Copper is essentially a reliquary - a tomb for that which was living (Blood), as well as referencing the Creation experience, manifest in the energy contained in each piece. Each panel is a metaphorical door/window(Acrylic) into an alternate dimension or metaphysical state. Copper, an excellent conductor, references the energy coursing through each living being. All is encapsulated by UV-resistant Resin, ensuring preservation.

Yes, Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has a "normal" boyfriend, and for parents Gomez and Morticia, this shocking development will turn the Addams house downside up. It's a family portrait that's completely off the wall.

25th Anniversary Production of Les Miserables Coming to DeVos Performance Hall

Cameron Mackintosh and Broadway Grand Rapids are delighted to announce that the hugely acclaimed new 25th anniversary production of the World's Longest-Running Musical, Les Miserables, will premiere at DeVos Performance Hall on Tuesday, November 29 through Sunday, December 4, 2011. The production features glorious new staging and spectacular reimagined scenery inspired by the paintings of Victor Hugo. The New York Times calls this Les Miserables "an unquestionably spectacular production from start to finish." The London Times hails the show "a five star hit, astonishingly powerful and as good as the original." The Star-Ledger says "a dynamically re-imagined hit. This Les Miserables has improved with age" and NY1-TV proclaims "this new production actually exceeds the original. The storytelling is clearer, the perspective grittier and the motivations more honest. Music theatre fans can rejoice: Les Miz is born again."

"I'm delighted that 25 years after Les Miz originally opened in London the audience for this marvelous show is bigger and younger than ever before," said producer Cameron Mackintosh. "Over the years I have seen many successful but visually different productions, so it has been exciting to draw inspiration from the brilliant drawings and paintings of Victor Hugo himself, integrated with spectacular projections. The new Les Miz is a magnificent mix of dazzling images and epic staging, driving one of the greatest musical stories ever told."

Based on Victor Hugo's classic novel, Les Miserables is an epic and uplifting story about the survival of the human spirit. The magnificent score of Les Miserables includes the classic songs "I dreamed a dream," "On My Own," "Stars," "Bring Him Home," "Do You Hear the People Sing?," "One Day More," "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables," "Master Of The House" and many more.

Cameron Mackintosh's new production of Boubil and Schonberg's Les Miserables has music by Claude-Michael Schonberg, lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer from the original French text by Alain Boubil and Jean-Marc Natel and additional material by James Fenton. The production is directed by Laurence Connor and James Powell, designed by Matt Kinley, inspired by the paintings of Victor Hugo, with costumes by Andreane Neofitou and additional costumes by Christine Rowlands, lighting by Paule Constable, and sound by Mick Potter.

Les Miserables originally opened in London at the Barbican Theatre on October 8, 1985, transferred to the Palace Theatre on December 4, 1985 and moved to its current home at the Queen's Theatre on April 3, 2004 where it continues to play to packed houses. When Les Miserables celebrated its 21st London birthday on October 8, 2006, it became the World's Longest-Running Musical, surpassing the record previously held by Cats in London's West End.

In celebration of its 25th anniversary, the legendary musical Les Miserables made theatrical history with an international first-three different productions in London at the same time. The Original Production (still playing to packed houses at the Queen's Theatre), the acclaimed New 25th anniversary Production at the Barbican (where the show originally premiered) and a celebratory concert at The O2 Arena. The O2 Concert was presented in over 500 cinemas throughout the United States on November 17, 2010 and is now available on Blu-ray DVD through Universal Studios Home Entertainment.

The Broadway production of Les Miserables originally opened at the Broadway Theatre on March 12, 1987 and transferred to the Imperial Theatre on October 17, 1990 running for 6,680 performances. The US National Tour began in November 1987 and visited over 150 cities before closing in St. Louis, MO in 2006. Broadway audiences welcomed Les Miz back to New York on November 9, 2006 where the show played the Broadhurst Theatre until its final performance on January 6, 2008. To date, Les Miserables remains the 3rd longest-running Broadway production of all time.

Seen by nearly 60 million people worldwide in 42 countries and in 21 languages, Les Miserables is undisputedly one of the world's most popular musicals ever written, with new productions continually opening around the globe, with seven more currently scheduled. There have been 36 cast recordings of Les Miserables, including the multi-platinum London cast recording, the Grammy Award-winning Broadway cast and complete symphonic albums and the soon to be released live recording of the New 25th Anniversary Production. John Mellencamp’s No Better Than This Tour Making A Stop In Grand Rapids

Documentary Film Chronicling The Creation of The “No Better Than This” Album To Open The Show

Concert dates for the next leg of John Mellencamp’s No Better Than This Tour, that began last year in Indiana, have just been announced with a performance set this November 1st at DeVos Performance Hall at 7PM. Tickets go on sale Friday, August 5th at 10am. Prices are $42, $72, $92 and $125. Tickets will be available at the Van Andel Arena box office, Ticketmaster outlets, ticketmaster.com, or charge by phone: 800-745-3000. Tickets will also be available at the DeVos Place box office during the on-sale and following the on-sale, beginning August 8, 2011.

Mellencamp’s No Better Than This Tour is just back from a run of dates in Ireland, England, Germany, France, Netherlands, Denmark, Switzerland and Italy. The 17-date tour begins on October 25 at Boston’s Citi Performing Arts Center Wang Theater and will be making a stop in Savannah, GA at the Johnny Mercer Theater on November 11.

This Savannah show is of extra significance in light of the fact that sessions for Mellencamp’s critically acclaimed “No Better Than This” album began less than half a mile away at Savannah’s First African Baptist Church. Mellencamp and producer T Bone Burnett would go on to record the rest of the album at Sun Studio in Memphis and in Room 414 of San Antonio's Gunter Hotel where Robert Johnson recorded in 1936. The sessions were documented on a 55-year-old mono tape recorder using just one vintage microphone at each location.

As a reflection of the diversity of styles and material that have been a hallmark of Mellencamp's eclectic career, the No Better Than This concerts are formatted into three segments. These showcase John Mellencamp in an acoustic context, fronting a small combo recalling blues/country and rockabilly roots and with his full rock band. Musicians backing Mellencamp include Michael Wanchic (guitar), Andy York (guitar), Miriam Sturm (violin), John Gunnell (electric and upright bass), Dane Clark (drums and percussion) and Troye Kinnett (accordion/keyboards).

Each of the No Better Than This tour dates will be preceded by a screening of It’s About You, the documentary by filmmakers Kurt and Ian Markus, shot on Super 8, over the course of 2009’s Bob Dylan-John Mellencamp-Willie Nelson tour of minor league baseball stadiums. The hour-long film, both a SXSW Film Festival and Nashville Film Festival selection, chronicles the creation of the No Better Than This album that was recorded on that tour’s off days. The film will be shown at 7 PM at each of the No Better Than This Tour venues so ticket holders are advised to arrive in time to see it.

As was the case with its album namesake, No Better Than This concerts have been the subject of an impressive number of laudatory reviews. A selection of excerpts from those follows. “Mellencamp gloriously proved that not only is he one of America’s treasures, an incredible singer-songwriter and guitarist, he’s also a master at putting together a set.” - Dallas Morning News:

“…A concert that seesawed between facing mortality — full of songs about death — and a stubborn determination to live fully.” - New York Times

“...He maintains remarkable vocal strength. It's an instrument that's perfectly suited to a catalogue of songs that aim to provide a voice to a cast of uncelebrated working-class figures.” - Richmond Times-Dispatch

“His voice, grainy and loaded with gravitas, remains as compelling and as affective as it was the day he recorded ‘Pink Houses’ in 1983. It’s a voice that’s as distinctive as any of his arguably more famous peers, from Dylan to Springsteen to Petty, and like those artists, it’s attached to a man who has kept integrity high on his priority list. Johnny Cash once referred to him as one of the ten best songwriters, and Mellencamp’s newer material didn’t disappoint in a live setting.” - American Songwriter

“..it was a generous show, giving the fans what they wanted, but also allowing the leader to indulge in a more old-school style.” - St Paul Pioneer Press

“This concert was superb from beginning to end, with Mellencamp and his crack band taking a stripped down, neo-folk approach until the last quarter, when he unleashed his rock 'n' roll persona. I'm loath to call anything the best, but if I have to choose, this was the concert of the year in Pittsburgh.” - Pittsburgh Tribune
